Before and After of a Wedding Gown Restyling.

This gown had a proportion issue. It actually fit pretty well, but needed a recut in the back so the corset would fit correctly and be aesthetically pleasing. Gowns that have zippers in the back can be converted to a corset in the same manner as I created this now beautiful lace up back. This is a very common styling adjustment that I have mastered in my studio.

Wedding and Formal Gown Alterations , Styling and Tailoring

- a different kind of sewing

  • Have your alterations done by a professional that is experienced in bridal and formal alterations, and is familiar with current styles.

  • Bridal gown alterations are more complicated and detailed then basic sewing.  Many brides make the mistake of having someone unskilled in alterations work on their gown only to find it done incorrectly or more difficult than anticipated.  Trust your gown to someone who is experienced in these alterations.

  • Select a PACC (Professional Association of Custom Clothiers) member to alter your gown.  PACC professionals follow high quality standards and are experts in their field.  If you will be married out of town or are an out of town bride, Dress Forms will help you locate a PACC member in most areas of the country.

  • Designer Joi Mahon of Dress Forms Design Studio is skilled and experienced in Bridal Alterations.  As a degreed fashion designer and PACC member, she has studied in depth gown construction, created gowns, re-cut, re-styled and altered hundreds of gowns.  Brides are referred to Joi for the most difficult and complicated alterations because she can accommodate the challenge.  She listens to your concerns and ideas so you will feel comfortable discussing fitting issues.  You will have more confidence that your gown is given the utmost care, attention & experience!

Styling

Joi has the little tips and tricks that will fine tune your appearance. Many times styling is more important then alterations. Some common fit issues that need styling include:
  • How to fix a gapping neck line.

  • How to fix puckering on a beaded bodice.

  • How to fix pinching underarms on a strapless bodice.

  • How to lift the bust line without adding bust cups.

  • How to smooth a seam without alterations.

  • How to do more then a basic bustle.

  • How to prevent undergarments from showing.

  • How to select proper undergarments for your gown.

ALTERATION TIPS

  • Set an appointment for you alterations when you order your gown and attendant dresses.

  • Allow time for multiple fittings if necessary to perfect the fit of your gown.

  • Nude foundation garments look best under wedding gowns.  Wear these and bring all foundation garments and shoes to every fitting.

  • Order your gown the size you are now.  It can always be taken in, but letting out or adding to a gown is much more costly.

  • Arrange for a final pressing and steaming of your gown.

  • Never try on your gown wearing heavy make-up, perfume, lotions or anything that may spot your gown.

  • Budget for your alterations.  Many factors determine the cost of formal alterations including what needs to be altered, how well the garment is assembled, how many layers, experience of your stylist, and how much time you allow to complete the alteration.  Discuss with who ever is fitting your gowns what needs to be done, why, how, much and plan accordingly.

  • With a little preparation and planning, you will look your best on your wedding day.
