USEFUL INFORMATION ON ORGANIC FABRICS

There is  a growing interest in Organic and Natural fabrics, but few fabrics are truly "natural or organic" so education is key. Similar to food labeling, fabrics have Natural, Organic, 100% Certified Organic labeling and many variations inbetween. Creating any fabric is very labor and processing intensive from all stages of production. There are some "recycyled" fabrics out there, but the materials used to create those fabrics are not natural to begin with so forget  fabrics labeled "recycled" or "friendly."

At minimum the best fabrics to start with for any design are those using natural fibers of Silk, Cotton, Wool and  Flax. Any other fibers are manufactured using chemicals and heavy processing.

Organic fabrics need to start with organic fibers grown in certified organic farms. The most authentic cottons, woolens, shirtings, linens and 100% natural fibers come from the US and Western European Countries such as England, Belgium, and Ireland to name a few. Their processes are very clean and are pretty healthy/safe for the environment. The laws are extremely strict in these countires for pollution, and  they will be fined heavily or closed down for breaking the law. Fabric dying is a water based process, and  look at the water in these countires- you can still drink it. Again. pollution is not allowed. Even if Western European fabrics are not labeled "Organic"  they are more likely to be organic then a fabric with the label. Note: a non-invasive fertilizer may be applied to the cotton plant which might eliminate being able to apply the "organic" or "certified organic" label, but they are still better then the following:

Chinese and Indian Fabrics: There are many fabrics coming from these and other countries with the label "organic" but they may not actually be certified or authentic organic fabrics. In the world of textiles if "organic" is selling then manufacturer's will apply a label or work around certification in order to apply that label. With the lead issues in toys, tainted water in baby formula, and the inconsistencies in pollution in some countires the certification process is not always accurate or honest.
