Every Designer Joi pattern and class is a study in clothing: how it interacts with the individual body, how the pattern is made, how different fabrics create different effects when sewing on the bias, and more. Bias is more than a term in sewing or a grainline for pattern placement. Bias is a tool for every sewer that can aid in creating beautifully draped clothing, from using the true bias to a slight degree of bias (off-grain) to your advantage in softening fabric and contouring over the figure. Every garment features bias, and every pattern has a contour that is technically “off-grain”. No need to fear “off-grain” when used intentionally; instead, master these fabric characteristics and take your sewing to the next level.
This pattern was designed to be a fun and easy-to-sew design, but also a lesson in grain, with an application that extends beyond this pattern to many others. Pair this pattern with the companion class in our video player.
MATERIALS NEEDED
Main fabric: This pattern can be sewn in just about any fabric:
Fleece, knit, crepe, lace, faux fur, any fabric you desire. This pattern will use 2-3 yards of fabric, depending on the length of the tunic and whether you add sleeves. This is a sleeveless pattern, but the Cozy Clothes Jacket Pattern’s sleeve is designed to pair with it. See the video tutorial on adding a sleeve.

The PDF workbook is a guide to this pattern, including some or all of the following worksheets: workbook cover, permissions, printing instructions, size chart, pattern card, design detail checklist, fitting tips and tricks, measurement charts, customizing the flat pattern, fabric layout, and a sewing steps outline. some creative options. This pattern includes a basic outline of sewing instructions and can be sewn as a standalone pattern, but some details may be omitted. For example, adding a zipper may be referenced, but the specific steps for adding a zipper are not included; however, Joi designs her patterns for interactive instruction, and this pattern and workbook are meant to be used with the companion video class for complete step-by-step detailed instruction (hours of videos just for this single pattern) with in-depth details that we are not able to put in the workbook.
